Disclaimer: Yeah, drilling it probably voids your warranty. And if you get hurt, well, we’re both idiots. But I think this is safer than the doorway, especially for those semi-acrobatic P90X2 moves. Use at your own risk.

I should have taken more detailed photos but it’s a pretty simple modification.

The big thing is drilling the holes through the longest part of the bar to mount on the freestanding pullup bar stand. Use the old bar as a location guide.

** Take the old pads off the old bar and use them maybe on the round front positions on this bar. IIRC, that’s what I did with mine. Or, wherever you like.

You WILL need the board. You will bend and break stuff if you try to just bolt it on. Too much torque. The bars pointing down press on the board and are screwed to it. You may need to put a few thin pieces of wood between the board and the vertical bars on the stand. Those two screws about 1″ apart hold those shims on mine. This is so it doesn’t really move around.

It’s not a hard mod to do, and the bar is all held together with screws, so the only thing you could mess up is drilling the screw holes in the same location as the old bar.

Technically, the bar is upside down in this pic, and the cross bar that presses against the wall when it’s used in a doorway isn’t used, because it’s too narrow. Hence the big ugly board. The only move that’s slightly impacted by this mod is the L-shaped pullup acrobatic move in P90X2, but you can get 80-90% of that move and it’s a killer anyway, so no huge loss there.

It’s been stable and fine for months now.

Here’s where to buy the gear you need.

Your purchases help support this site 🙂

Pullup bar:

Note that this is STEEL, and has a bunch of pads. And more positions than the cheap ones you get elsewhere.

I also use this pullup assist for when I’m tired, or for more reps on difficult moves, etc.  You don’t even have to be able to do full pullups to use all this gear if you have the assist, and it lets you get extra reps if you switch from full moves to doing them with this. Invaluable.

Chin-UpMax250x250You can buy the assist and the P90X bar and a couple of goodies in this package for a $10 less than separate:

Freestanding stand:

Here are a couple of choices from Amazon. I have the Body Champ, but a slightly different one. The Weider SHOULD also work, by looking at it. “Your mileage may vary.”

Protip: you can hang a couple of 10lb weights or so in the loops under the footrests in the back and/or put some large dumbbells over the legs in the back to keep it from moving around if you are doing the semi-aerobatic P90X2 moves.
